How the Milrinone Lactate Works:

Milrinone works on the heart to increase the force with which the heart pumps blood through the body (heart tonic). This increases the amount of blood the heart pumps and improves blood circulation in a patient whose heart is not pumping strongly enough (eg, congestive heart failure).

For the short-term intravenous (IV; into a vein) treatment of acute decompensated heart failure.

  • Breastfeeding: It is not known if milrinone appears in breast milk. Consult your doctor before you begin breastfeeding.

  • Children: Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established. Lab tests will be required to monitor therapy. Tests may include fluid and electrolyte levels and kidney function. Blood pressure, heart rate, and electrocardiogram will also be monitored during treatment.
