Phytonadione (Vitamin K) Drug Information - Side Effects and Some Precautions for Use

Type of Drug:

Antihemorrheologic; antibleeding agent.

How the Phytonadione (Vitamin K) Works:

Phytonadione stimulates the production of certain factors needed for blood to clot.

Uses of Phytonadione (Vitamin K):

To treat certain bleeding disorders caused by a lack of vitamin K or interference with the way vitamin K works.

Precautions:

Do not use in the following situations: Allergy to this medicine.

Use with caution in the following situations: Anticoagulant use, liver disease.

Injection: Phytonadione should be given under the skin or in the muscle.

Injection into the vein (IV) may lead to shock, heart attack, stopped breathing and death. IV injection should only be used when the other methods are not possible and the serious risk involved is considered justified.

Pregnancy: Adequate studies have not been done in pregnant women, or animal studies may have shown a risk to the fetus. Use only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh the possible risk to the fetus.

Breastfeeding: Phytonadione appears in breast milk. Consult your doctor.

Children: Safety and effectiveness have not been established. Certain blood and liver problems in infants may be related to phytonadione use. Do not exceed recommended dosage.

Lab Tests: Lab tests will be required. Tests may include prothrombin time monitoring.

Drug Interactions:

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or planning to take any over­the-counter or prescription medications or dietary supplements. Doses of one or both drugs may need to be adjusted or a different drug may need to be prescribed. Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) and mineral oil interact with this medicine.

Side Effects of Phytonadione (Vitamin K):

Every drug is capable of producing side effects. Many patients experience no, or minor, side effects. The frequency and severity of side effects depend on many factors including dose, duration of therapy and individual susceptibility. Possible side effects include: Temporary flushing and taste changes; pain, swelling and tenderness at the injection site; allergic reactions

  • Results are not immediate.

  • Store at room temperature. Protect from light.
